Preoperative test checklist
For planned surgery, the assessment should be completed before admission. In an acute injury, the necessary tests may be performed at the hospital.
Blood tests should be taken fasting unless your clinician gives different instructions.
Laboratory tests
- Complete blood count, ESR and white-cell differential — valid for 14 days
- Urinalysis — 14 days
- Blood chemistry: total protein, glucose, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and electrolytes — 1 month
- Coagulation panel: APTT, INR, fibrinogen and prothrombin — 1 month
- Clotting and bleeding time — 1 month
- Syphilis screening, HIV, HBs antigen and hepatitis C antibodies — 3 months
- ABO blood group and Rh factor — no expiry
- Red-cell Rh phenotype and Kell antigen — no expiry
Instrumental examinations
- Chest X-ray or fluorography — 6 months
- ECG — 14 days
- Lower-limb venous Doppler ultrasound — 1 month when required for lower-limb replacement, lower-limb trauma or other indications
- Preoperative X-rays in two projections — 3 months
- Gastroscopy — 3 weeks when required for joint replacement or other indications
- Echocardiography — 3 weeks when indicated
- Any current infection screening required by the hospital

- Other specialist consultations when indicated
